DOJ Officials Warn Texans About Focus on Tax Fraud Enforcement

With more federal resources than ever devoted to the enforcement of tax laws, government officials are warning Texans that efforts to fight tax evasion and other white-collar crimes have been fortified. Prosecutors from the U.S. Department of Justice, in collaboration with investigators from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), recently convened a news conference in Austin addressing ongoing initiatives aimed at tackling financial misconduct within the state.
One of the primary areas of focus for the DOJ is the prosecution of individuals and organizations allegedly engaged in tax evasion and fraudulent tax schemes. This includes cases involving accusations of income underreporting, fraudulent deductions and the use of offshore accounts to conceal assets.
In addition to targeting individuals purportedly involved in traditional forms of tax evasion, the DOJ has also prioritized combating fraud related to government programs and benefits. Some of these actions relate to alleged false claims for tax refunds, unemployment benefits, COVID-19 relief funds and other forms of government assistance. Furthermore, the DOJ has stepped up its efforts to combat identity theft and refund fraud, which pose significant challenges to tax administration and taxpayer security.
While stopping tax violations and other white-collar offenses is a worthy goal, these matters can be very complex, and government workers frequently mistake proper actions for illegal conduct. Unfortunately, the IRS and DOJ are large organizations with virtually unlimited resources, so fighting back against an unwarranted charge from an overzealous prosecutor is a serious challenge.
Should you learn that you are the target of an investigation from the U.S. Attorney’s office on a tax matter or another issue, there is no time to waste. Hiring a seasoned attorney with a track record of success in complex federal cases is a top priority. Developing a strong defense in these matters might depend on a detailed review of physical documents and/or online data. You might feel pressured into a guilty plea that supposedly eases the penalties, but you should make an important decision without discussing potential defenses and weaknesses in the government’s case with a knowledgeable lawyer.
